If you have plans to travel abroad, you’ll need to apply for a passport (or you may need to renew an existing one). When submitting your application for a passport, a passport ID photo is needed—and must meet specific requirements to be accepted.

Passport Photo Basics

Mailed Passport Photo Requirements
Photo must be 2”x 2” (51 x 51 mm) with the head centered and sized between 1” and 1.4” (25 and 35 mm).
Photo resolution should not result in pixelation or printer dots.
Photo must be in color and recent (within last 6 months).
Photo must be a clear image of your face. No filters, hair cannot cover face (and should be pushed back off shoulders), glasses removed (including prescription glasses), no hats, no head covering, and no face mask or face covering. Exceptions to head/face coverings made for religious or medical purposes—COVID precautions not included.
Phot of applicant should have them directly facing camera with a neutral expression (not smiling). Iris and pupil of eyes should be visible.
Photo should reproduce skin tones and hair color accurately (not under- or over-exposed, proper color-balancing and clarity settings).
Photo should not have any shadows.
Photo must have a plain white or off-white background; cropping or photoshopping the removal of the background is prohibited.
Photo of children, including infants, should not have another person in the photo. It is best if the child’s eyes are open; however, it is acceptable if an infant’s eyes are not open for the photograph.
